Start with member workloads and concurrency

An office with 100 members does not need 100 times one person’s peak speed, because everyone is not always at peak. It does need enough busy-hour capacity, upload and access-point airtime for the workloads that coincide: calls, cloud sync, software updates and guest traffic.

Count occupied seats, meeting-room calls and shared events separately. A network that works on an empty tour can fail when several rooms start video meetings at the same hour.

The operator checklist

  • Document primary circuit capacity, practical upload and the service handoff location.
  • Map access-point coverage at desks, phone booths, meeting rooms and shared social areas.
  • Separate trusted operations, members, guests and building devices using appropriate network controls.
  • Monitor latency, loss and utilization—not only whether the router answers a ping.
  • Test failover on a schedule and record which sessions or services are interrupted.
  • Define a member-facing incident channel and realistic update interval.
  • Keep dated busy-hour observations for each work zone and major network change.

What members should ask

A member does not need the complete network diagram, but should be able to learn whether upload is adequate for calls, which areas are strongest, whether Ethernet exists and what backup is available. Ask when failover was last tested—not only whether a second line was purchased.

For a trial day, work from the intended desk and make a normal call during the hours you will use the space. A single speed test immediately after opening is not representative of a full afternoon.

Redundancy without a shared single point of failure

Two plans from different brands can still enter the building through the same duct, depend on the same wholesale network or share power and router infrastructure. A useful backup analysis asks which physical and operational failures are actually independent.

Failover should be exercised safely, with members informed. Record detection time, routing change, session interruption and backup capacity. A dormant SIM in an untested router is inventory, not proven resilience.

Publish evidence without selling a score

A venue can publish observed metrics, test context, known weak areas and the observation date. This is more credible than a permanent “best Wi-Fi” badge. The evidence should expire or be retested after material network changes.
