Before choosing a destination
- Open the country profile and read the score together with data period, mode, sample size and confidence.
- Compare upload and latency, not just download rank, against your actual work pattern.
- Check whether your work hours overlap with likely busy periods at the destination.
- Identify at least two mobile carriers and whether your device supports the required bands and eSIM profile.
- List coworking spaces or day-pass venues within a realistic travel time of the accommodation.
Before booking accommodation
Ask a question that can produce useful evidence: “Could you send a recent test from the desk in this room type, including upload and latency, and tell me when it was taken?” This is more actionable than asking whether Wi-Fi is fast.
Confirm whether the advertised connection is shared with the whole property, whether wired access exists, whether VPN use is allowed and whether there are data or device limits. If a host cannot answer, price the trip as if you will need a coworking pass or mobile backup.
Build a redundancy plan
| Layer | Example | Failure it covers |
|---|---|---|
| Primary | Room Wi-Fi or wired Ethernet | Normal daily workload |
| Secondary | Mobile data on a different carrier | Venue router or upstream outage |
| Workspace backup | Nearby coworking/day pass | Poor room signal or long repair |
| Low-bandwidth mode | Audio-only call, paused sync | Temporary congestion |
| Operational backup | Download files and meeting numbers | Cloud or identity interruption |
Arrival-day verification
- 1
Set up immediately
Do not wait until five minutes before the first meeting to discover a captive portal or device limit.
- 2
Test the actual desk
Record download, upload and latency, then make a short call with the VPN and tools you normally use.
- 3
Test the backup
Confirm tethering, allowance and indoor signal on the secondary carrier.
- 4
Repeat during a busy period
A quiet midday result is insufficient if your meetings happen during evening guest demand.
- 5
Escalate early
Request a room change, access-point check or coworking alternative while operational options remain open.
Security and policy checks
A usable connection is not automatically a trusted connection. Keep operating systems updated, prefer encrypted services, verify captive-portal domains and use your organization’s approved VPN or zero-trust access where required.
Do not assume a consumer VPN makes every activity safe or lawful. Follow employer policy, local law and the service terms of the network. For sensitive work, ask whether a private or wired network is available rather than exposing confidential material in a crowded shared workspace.
After the trip: preserve useful evidence
Save the venue, room or work area, date, time, access type and key results. A short note about call quality or busy-hour change makes the numbers more interpretable later.
You can also contribute an anonymous GCI measurement. Country-level aggregation requires multiple valid observations; one excellent room does not become a national claim.
